Censorship at 'Terror-Free Turkey' meeting

The imposition of a ban on SÖZCÜ reporter Evren Demirdaş asking questions at a meeting themed "Terror-Free Turkey," held by the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) in Elazığ, has sparked a serious debate regarding press freedom.

The event, organized by the MHP Elazığ Provincial Presidency, was attended by members of the party's Central Executive Committee and Elazığ Deputy Semih Işıkver. While no restrictions were placed on other members of the press attending the meeting, this stance directed solely at the SÖZCÜ reporter was evaluated as personal targeting and institutional censorship.

Journalist Evren Demirdaş was warned by MHP officials shortly after the meeting began not to ask any questions. Reacting to this situation, Demirdaş protested the obstruction of the freedom to ask questions—a fundamental right of the journalistic profession—and left the meeting.

Serkan Gürtürk, President of the Euphrates Basin Journalists Association, stated in a statement following the incident that press freedom had been violated. Gürtürk said, "A journalist's duty is not just to listen, but to ask questions in order to inform the public. It is unacceptable for a member of the press to be invited to a meeting and then have their right to ask questions blocked. This incident is contrary to the spirit of democracy and a free press. We condemn this censorship imposed on SÖZCÜ reporter Evren Demirdaş. Ensuring an environment where journalists can work freely is the responsibility of all parties."

This incident signifies not only the obstruction of journalistic activities but also the obstruction of the public's right to receive information. It was once again emphasized that the necessary environment must be provided for members of the press to work freely.
