RTÜK gives BirGün TV 72 hours to obtain a license
RTÜK has granted BirGün TV, which recently began broadcasting, a 72-hour deadline to obtain a license.
Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) member İlhan Taşçı stated that BirGün TV, which began broadcasting via YouTube on September 1, is required to obtain a license less than a week after starting its broadcasting life.
Taşçı emphasized that this decision, which was taken by RTÜK by a majority vote, is not provided for in the law.
Taşçı said, "Many channels close to the government or RTÜK in Turkey can broadcast, including on digital platforms, without paying license fees. However, when you are a critical broadcaster, RTÜK constantly stands over you as a threat. Just don't think, don't question, don't criticize..."
While this deadline granted for BirGün TV to obtain a license has sparked debate in the media world, Taşçı's statements have also drawn attention.
