Erdoğan signs off: Electric vehicle era in the public sector

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has prepared a 'Savings Target and Implementation Guide for Public Buildings'. In accordance with the Presidential Circular titled 'Energy Savings in Public Buildings', published with the signature of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, electric vehicles will be prioritized in new public sector purchases of motor vehicles such as buses and cars under the guide. Solar energy panels will be installed on the roofs and parking areas of public buildings.

In 2019, a 15 percent energy savings target was set for public buildings required to appoint an energy manager in order to use public resources efficiently and reduce energy costs. With President Erdoğan's circular published in the Official Gazette on November 4, this 15 percent target was increased to 30 percent by 2030. The circular stated that the Ministry of Energy would publish a guide covering the years 2024-2030 to achieve the set savings target.

The guide covers public buildings required to appoint an energy manager under the Energy Efficiency Law. Buildings with an annual total energy consumption of over 250 TOE or public buildings with a total construction area of over 10 thousand square meters are required to appoint an energy manager according to the Energy Efficiency Law. According to the report in Sabah, buildings owned by the public that are not planned for demolition, relocation, or disposal and have completed at least 5 years as of January 1, 2024, will achieve 30 percent savings in energy sources and efficient equipment usage for heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, hot water supply, and other equipment.
