Mandatory winter tire warning for drivers
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the mandatory winter tire requirement will begin on November 15 and continue until April 15. Drivers who do not comply with the rules will face a fine of 5,856 Turkish Lira.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that they have updated the dates for the winter tire regulation, changing the period from December 1 - April 1 to November 15 - April 15. With this change, the application period has been extended from 4 months to 5 months.
Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that winter tires play a critical role in preventing accidents by increasing road grip at temperatures below 7 degrees. "The regulation will be mandatory for all commercial vehicles carrying passengers and goods on intercity roads. We also recommend that private vehicle owners install winter tires," he said.
Stating that governorates can determine the winter tire application within their provincial borders, Uraloğlu said, "Governorates can add one month before and after the specified date range. It is of great importance that our drivers carefully follow the announcements."
EQUIPMENT SUITABLE FOR WINTER CONDITIONS
Stating that all tires on vehicles such as trucks, tractor units, tankers, and buses must be winter tires, Uraloğlu said that the same requirement applies to pickup trucks, minibuses, and automobiles. He also reminded that studded tires, which can be used on icy surfaces, also count as winter tires. "Having or using tire chains in the vehicle does not eliminate the winter tire requirement; we should still ensure that our vehicles have the necessary equipment such as chains, wheel chocks, and tow ropes," he stated.
