151-year-old magazine shuts down

When Popular Science began publication in 1872, it drew attention with its content on science, technology, and nature. The magazine, which quickly gained prominence, became one of the most prestigious publications in its field. 

According to a report by Webtekno, the magazine, which witnessed world wars, pandemics, crises, and the Cold War, has ended its 151-year journey. 

It was known that the magazine, briefly referred to as PopSci, had been facing difficulties in recent years. First, in 2018, the magazine's publication cycle was changed. Normally published monthly, PopSci began appearing quarterly from that year on. In 2021, the magazine transitioned entirely to digital. 

In a post on LinkedIn regarding the matter, PopSci editor Purbita Saha stated that she was "disappointed, angry, and horrified that the magazine's owners would shut down a pioneering publication that had adapted to change for 151 years in a five-minute Zoom call." PopSci, which ended its magazine format, had also laid off five editors and several staff members earlier this month. Recently, many websites and magazines have resorted to laying off their science editors. 

Cathy Herbert, Communications Director at Recurrent Ventures, which also owns Popular Science magazine, said that PopSci needs to evolve beyond the digital magazine. 

From now on, Popular Science will only publish articles on its own website. It is also stated that video content will be produced for PopSci.
