4.2 magnitude earthquake occurs in the Cyprus Arc Zone

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake has occurred in the Cyprus Arc Zone. The earthquake has once again brought the seismic activity in the region to the agenda. Prof. Dr. Görür emphasized that the Cyprus Arc is one of the subduction zones that produces the largest earthquakes in our country. He stated that in this region, the African Plate is subducting beneath the Anatolian Plate and that the focus of the earthquake is located on this subducting plate.

Such earthquakes occur as a result of plate movements in the region and can occasionally create significant seismic activity. Prof. Dr. Görür stated that such events are important for understanding the seismic risk in the region and taking the necessary precautions.

While no loss of life or property has been reported following the earthquake, experts state that seismic activity in the region should continue to be monitored. The earthquake caused brief panic in residential areas in the region, but no serious damage was reported.
