Anthropic in talks with US administration to lift export ban

Anthropic has begun meeting with government representatives to overcome the new export restrictions implemented by the US on June 13. The export ban imposed on the company's state-of-the-art artificial intelligence models, named "Fable 5" and "Mythos 5," has completely blocked access to these systems for foreign governments, companies, and individuals. Following this development, Anthropic executives met with the US administration in Washington over the weekend.

Following the restriction decision, many cybersecurity experts, academics, and leading figures in the technology sector sent an open letter to the US administration requesting the removal of the export restrictions. The letter emphasized that the "Fable 5" and "Mythos 5" models do not pose a unique risk and that similar capabilities exist in other artificial intelligence systems. Furthermore, the warning that such bans would weaken the US's global artificial intelligence leadership and cyber defense capacity drew attention. The signatories also called for future artificial intelligence risk assessments to be conducted in a more scientific and transparent manner.

TENSE HISTORY BETWEEN ANTHROPIC AND THE GOVERNMENT

The friction between Anthropic and the US government began when the company refused to offer its Claude artificial intelligence model for military projects. On February 24, the Pentagon warned the company, saying, "either we work together or the contract ends." On February 27, President Trump ordered federal agencies to immediately stop using Anthropic technologies.

In the days that followed, the Pentagon classified Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" after the firm took a clear stance against the use of its technology for monitoring US citizens and in fully autonomous weapons systems. The company subsequently filed two separate lawsuits against the government, alleging that the ministries' stance on artificial intelligence safety had turned into illegal retaliation.

As of June 13, Anthropic announced that, due to export controls, access to the "Fable 5" and "Mythos 5" artificial intelligence models had been immediately terminated for all foreigners outside the US, including its own employees. The company also suspended access for all its customers within the framework of legal regulations.
