Artificial intelligence becomes eyes for visually impaired couple

Visually impaired teacher couple Ayşegül Taşgın and Emre Taşgın, who live in Ankara, have started to navigate many aspects of life without needing help from anyone by using artificial intelligence. The couple, who benefit from the image recognition feature of artificial intelligence through their phones, said they dream of being able to drive cars in the future thanks to this technology.

35-year-old Social Studies teacher Emre Taşgın, who has been visually impaired since birth, said that he and his wife, to whom he has been married for 6 years, live alone and independently. Taşgın mentioned that the artificial intelligence they use during shopping warns them about spoiled products and suggests fresh ones.

"DRIVERLESS CARS WILL LIBERATE US"

Taşgın stated, "It can tell us where we are on the bus right now and which stores are around. It tells us about obstacles while we are walking on the street. It can mention poles in front of us or cars moving on the road. It can provide information such as whether traffic lights are green or red. When it provides this and we are sure of its accuracy, it is truly great, and our dream is actually for driverless cars to become widespread in the coming years. I think driverless cars will make us independent and liberate us."

AI SUPPORT FROM SHOPPING TO HOUSEHOLD CHORES

32-year-old Psychological Counselor and Guidance teacher Ayşegül Taşgın also explained that she uses artificial intelligence while distinguishing food items and cleaning the house. Taşgın said, "I see a lot of support from it, especially when distinguishing between red and green lentils, in terms of identifying them without touching the food. Sometimes I can even ask if a stain has come out when something is spilled on the table. I have been benefiting from these since this image recognition feature arrived."

"WE ARE NOT DEPENDENT ON ANYONE"

Stating that they were very worried about this when they got married, Taşgın concluded her words by saying, "We did a lot of research. We bought products that we could use according to our needs. We also use it for things like describing pictures while reading books, identifying authors' photos, having photos described, and asking about the colors and patterns of our clothes. It describes them quite well. We can handle our business without needing the help of another person. The phone and artificial intelligence have become like a limb for us."
