China-linked cyberattack alert in Norway

A hacker group believed to be state-sponsored by China, known as Salt Typhoon, has targeted the digital networks of various organizations in Norway. An assessment by the Norwegian Police Security Service emphasized that the attackers specifically identified vulnerable network devices and conducted espionage activities through these systems.

While Norway is one of the latest countries to be subjected to Salt Typhoon's infiltration operations, the group had previously drawn attention with similar actions in North American telecommunications infrastructure. It is alleged that the hackers have long been gaining unauthorized access to the networks of many critical infrastructure organizations in Canada and the US, and have accessed the contact information of important individuals, including high-level politicians.

According to the 2025 report by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, while the cost of cyberattacks worldwide reached the trillion-dollar level in 2025, some local reports (such as in Germany) or past US data point to regional damages of 300-320 billion units.

Norwegian authorities refrained from providing details regarding the Salt Typhoon group's attack, while it was reported that telecommunications companies in the country have increased their security levels. High-level US national security officials have also described such organizations as the "defining threat of the era."

Following the attack, the Norwegian Embassy in the US did not comment on the matter, while cybersecurity experts once again emphasized the importance of international cooperation.
