Controversial device that clones credit cards banned

DANGEROUS 'PRODUCT' BANNED

The device called Flipper Zero, which has been the subject of a trend on TikTok for some time, was also drawing attention by bypassing security firewalls. However, Amazon has banned the sale of this handheld device. First released in the summer of 2020, the device became even more popular this year alongside TikTok. Videos of pranksters using it to turn off restaurant screens, open card-access doors, and unlock vehicles have drawn attention on the social media platform.

Sold for 169 dollars, the Flipper Zero was not actually designed to deceive people. However, the device, whose usage is reminiscent of some retro 'Tamagotchi' games, is seen in videos shared on social media being used to disrupt classes by turning off smart boards and to shut down screens while someone is playing a live video game.

In another incident, a user managed to infiltrate a restaurant's digital wallpaper and the menu screens of a fast-food chain. Although there are frequent videos on social media of users pulling pranks with the device, it has been observed that the tool also has more malicious uses, including mimicking signals from car remote controls.

USED IN MANY METHODS

Since the device can scan and remember credit card information, including that from smartphones, it has also become a tool for financial fraud. It can also steal card information via smartphone features like Apple Pay, although the phone must be unlocked for this to occur. The device does not only threaten technological gadgets; it can also open hotel room doors that use card access.

Although it is mostly seen being used for pranks on social media, retail giant Amazon decided to ban the sale of the device given its potential dangers.

AMAZON ANNOUNCED IT HAS BEEN BANNED

Amazon sent a warning to third-party sellers to stop the sale of the product.

The notice stated that Amazon policy prohibits the sale or listing of card-cloning devices: "It has been determined that this product is a card-cloning device. We have taken this action because the sale of this product is not permitted on Amazon.com. It is your responsibility to ensure that the products you offer comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and Amazon policies."
