EU aims to install first small modular reactor by 2030

Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, stated that they have decided to establish an industrial alliance to ensure that small modular reactors (SMRs) are installed in Europe by 2030.

Simson spoke at a press conference regarding the European Commission's recommendation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040.

2040 TARGET

Pointing out that reducing carbon emissions by 90 percent by 2040 will change the energy system and mean that the sector will be almost completely decarbonized, Simson stated that renewable energy installations must be accelerated further to achieve this.

Simson noted that energy-intensive industries, in particular, will integrate new technologies and modernize their production processes, and explained that households will use energy more efficiently and shift toward heat pumps.

Pointing out that the infrastructure map across Europe needs to be redrawn to lower emissions, Simson said that gas pipelines will be redesigned to transport hydrogen or carbon.

670 BILLION EURO INVESTMENT

Stating that Europe needs to attract very high levels of investment in the energy sector for a long time, Simson used the expression, "We must be prepared to invest 670 billion euros per year in the energy sector between 2030 and 2040."

Emphasizing that Europe possesses significant expertise and a value chain in SMR technology, Simson said, "We have decided to establish an industrial alliance on small modular reactors this week to ensure that the first reactors are commissioned by 2030."

Simson stated that the countries participating in the alliance will comply with the highest nuclear safety and environmental standards.

Approximately 70 SMR concepts are currently in the development stage worldwide. These are designed to be smaller in size compared to traditional nuclear power plants.

SMRs are defined as nuclear reactors that produce between 10 and 300 megawatt-hours of electricity.
