Famous airline enters bankruptcy process, flights completely halted

The high cost of establishing a company in the aviation sector frequently brings the challenges faced by new ventures to the agenda. Most recently, Ecojet Airlines, which operated out of Scotland's capital, announced that it has ended its flights by opting for voluntary liquidation after failing to emerge from a financial bottleneck.

Experts state that the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) obtained from relevant authorities is of vital importance for an airline to begin operations. This document serves as proof that the company possesses sufficient aircraft, crew, and financial strength. However, similar problems have been experienced in recent years as some airlines such as H-Bird, Mali Air, and SmartLynx lost these certificates. Ecojet has now joined them.

Ecojet Airlines was launched in 2023 with an environment-focused vision. Led by British investor Dale Vince and former pilot Brent Smith, the venture aimed to become the world's first zero-emission regional airline. The company aimed to completely eliminate carbon emissions by equipping Twin Otter and ATR 72 model aircraft with hydrogen-electric engines.

In the initial phase, it was planned to launch flights between Edinburgh and Southampton, and subsequently expand across the United Kingdom and to various points in Europe. The long-term vision included growth on international routes.

However, the failure to secure the expected 20 million pounds in funding from new investors for the projects Ecojet aimed to implement posed a major obstacle. Furthermore, the fact that the technical infrastructure and testing process required for converting aircraft engines to hydrogen-electric technology were still in the early stages increased uncertainties regarding the project. With the personal funds of the company's co-founder Dale Vince also exhausted, the financial impasse could not be overcome.
