Google announces Android 16: Here are the standout features

Android 16 arrives with a brand-new design language called Material 3 Expressive. In addition to this, it offers more personalization options, advanced security features, and significant improvements in accessibility.

Android 16 comes with an innovation similar to the Live Activities feature on iOS: Real-time information from apps such as ride-sharing and food delivery can now be displayed directly on the lock screen. These live updates will be supported under the name Now Bar on Samsung phones, and Live Alerts on OPPO and OnePlus devices.

The new version can automatically group multiple notifications from the same app. For example, 20 messages from different people on WhatsApp will be collected under a single notification.

There are also significant improvements for hearing aid users. Users will be able to choose the phone microphone for a clearer conversation experience in noisy environments. Furthermore, access to hearing aid controls is now much easier.

With Android 16, Advanced Protection mode can be activated with a single tap. This feature aims to provide high-level security, especially against targeted and complex cyberattacks.

Google is working with Samsung to bring a desktop experience to mobile devices. This new windowing system coming with Android 16 will offer a DeX-like experience. Users will be able to move and resize multiple application windows on the same screen.

Another innovation planned to be introduced later in the year is system support that will allow users to create their own custom keyboard shortcuts.

In addition to this, Android 16 brings many small but effective improvements such as higher-quality screenshots, adaptive refresh rate, and improved authentication.

The update has started to be rolled out to Pixel devices first. More Material 3 Expressive design updates are also on the way for Pixel phones and smartwatches running Wear OS 6 later this year.
