Minister of Canadian Heritage Pascale St-Onge announced that they have reached a solution with Google in line with the law that requires companies to pay Canadian media publishers for using news content on their platforms. St-Onge stated at a press conference that the agreement is a positive development for the press sector, adding, "It is time to explain why Facebook does not support our news systems and how it paves the way for disinformation on its platform." Furthermore, St-Onge described the Meta company's decision to block access to news content from domestic and foreign media outlets on the Meta platform as "irresponsible," emphasizing that the Canadian press sector is at risk.

"ONLINE NEWS ACT"

The Online News Act, known as "Bill C-18" and passed in Canada in June, mandates that companies like Meta and Google pay Canadian media publishers for using news content on their platforms.

Under this law, Canadians are unable to access news content from domestic and foreign media outlets through their Meta accounts.
