Mandatory ID verification for social media: Start date announced
The era of identity verification on social media platforms is beginning in Turkey; users will no longer be able to open accounts without providing identification information.
According to the statement made by Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek, preparations for the mandatory ID verification system for social media have been completed, and the regulation in question will come into effect within the next three months.
With this change, social media accounts will only be able to be opened and used by users who present an identity document.
Minister Gürlek, speaking at a press conference in Diyarbakır, stated that the process concluded positively in discussions with the relevant platforms, saying, “Our negotiations with social media platforms have been completed. Our demands for mandatory ID verification for social media have been accepted. ID-based logins will be implemented within a period of about 3 months.”
Close cooperation was maintained among public institutions as part of the regulation. The Ministry of Justice has finalized technical infrastructure work with the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), and the Cyber Security Presidency, which began operations in 2025. Furthermore, it was reported that the Information and Communication Technologies Authority continues to hold discussions with social media platforms regarding technical details for the implementation of the practice.
With the new era, it will become mandatory for users to create social media accounts only with their identity information, and it will not be possible to use social media platforms with accounts that have not undergone identity verification.
