Millions of dollars in fines for individual who called voters using AI-generated Biden voice in the US!

In the US state of New Hampshire, a 6 million dollar fine has been imposed on an individual who made automated calls to voters before the primary elections in January using an AI-generated voice mimicking US President Joe Biden.

Political consultant Steven Kramer was accused of using technology to create a false identity and deceive voters.

The Federal Communications Commission fined Kramer 6 million dollars under the "Truth in Caller ID Act," while also imposing a 2 million dollar fine on Lingo Telecom, the company through which Kramer made the calls.

Kramer is also facing calls for prosecution on 13 charges, primarily "voter suppression," due to the AI-generated automated calls mimicking Biden that were made to thousands of voters before the New Hampshire primary on January 23.

State Attorney General John Formella stated in comments to US media regarding the matter that he is determined to ensure that New Hampshire's elections remain "free from illegal interference."

In New Hampshire, the crime of voter suppression carries a prison sentence of 3.5 to 7 years, while impersonating a candidate to commit fraud carries a penalty of up to one year in prison.

In a statement to the Associated Press (AP) in February, Kramer admitted to being the person behind the fake automated phone calls, claiming that he was not trying to influence voters' decisions, but rather wanted to send a wake-up call to the public about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence.

In the automated calls Kramer created with AI that mimicked Biden in January, New Hampshire residents were told there was no need to participate in the presidential primary, and that their votes would make a difference in the presidential election to be held on November 5, not in the primaries.
