New decision from Apple: To be updated every year
Apple is transitioning to a year-based model for its operating systems to create a more consistent and predictable naming system.
Apple is making a significant change to the version naming of its operating systems, moving away from its traditional numbering system. In the new model, similar to the automotive industry, version names reflecting the upcoming year will be used. With this change, the next version of iOS will be called iOS 26 instead of iOS 19. The same practice will apply to iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS, and users will see version 26 across these systems as well.
According to a report by Bloomberg, this move by Apple aims to provide greater consistency and predictability in operating system names. Versions currently referred to by different numbers, such as iOS 18, watchOS 12, and visionOS 2, will become more standardized under the new system.
This change is expected to be officially announced during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which begins on June 9. The event's keynote address will take place at 20:00 Turkey time. At WWDC, a comprehensive design overhaul for the interface of the visionOS operating system, used with the Vision Pro headset, may also be introduced. Apple aims to offer an advanced user experience that matches the powerful hardware of the Vision Pro.
