A new threat in cyberattacks: ChatGPT!

Microsoft and OpenAI have released statements regarding the existence of groups using artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT to carry out cyberattacks more effectively.

According to the statements from Microsoft and OpenAI, attackers have been using large language models for some time to make their attacks more sophisticated. A new study has found that attack groups based in Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are using tools like ChatGPT to research their targets, improve their code, and strengthen their social engineering techniques.

According to Microsoft's blog post, cyber attackers—including state-sponsored groups and others—are developing methods to utilize new technologies as they emerge. These methods range from phishing, social engineering, and simple manipulation techniques to detailing the operating principles of satellites.

Well-known teams are among the attacker groups. These include the Russia-linked group Strontium; Fancy Bear, which played a role in the Russia-Ukraine war and the exposure of Hillary Clinton's emails; and North Korean organizations like Thallium. The Iranian hacker group Curium uses these models for phishing attacks and to evade antivirus software.

Microsoft is turning toward greater use of artificial intelligence to cope with such attacks. The AI models developed by the company help in detecting and neutralizing these types of attacks.
