People with hearing loss who use hearing aids may live longer

A study conducted in the US has revealed that people with hearing loss who use hearing aids may live longer compared to those who do not.

Researchers from the University of Southern California, inspired by a study suggesting that hearing loss shortens lifespan, examined the effect of hearing aids on human longevity.

The researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey collected between 1999 and 2012 from approximately 10 thousand people with hearing loss, and re-contacted these individuals to inquire about their current health status.

Of these individuals, 1863 reported having hearing loss, while 237 stated that they used hearing aids regularly.

The study results revealed that among people with hearing loss, those who used hearing aids had a 24 percent higher probability of living longer compared to those who did not.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Janet Choi, stated, "These results are exciting because they suggest that hearing aids may have a protective effect on people's health and could prevent premature death."

The results of the study were published in the journal "The Lancet Healthy Longevity".
