Student expelled over AI accusations sues university!
A doctoral student expelled from the University of Minnesota for allegedly using artificial intelligence has denied the accusations and filed a lawsuit against the university.
Haishan Yang, a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota, was expelled from the school on allegations that he completed his exams using artificial intelligence tools. Having lost his student visa as a result of this decision, Yang has filed a lawsuit against both the university and his professors. Denying the accusations against him, Yang argued that his professors intentionally displayed a negative attitude and initiated legal proceedings, stating that he lost his student visa due to the university's decision.

SIMILARITIES IN THE EXAM DREW ATTENTION
Haishan Yang, a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota, was asked to write three essays within eight hours during an exam he took remotely from Morocco in the summer of 2024. The use of artificial intelligence was prohibited in the exam, but the professors detected signs that artificial intelligence had been used in Yang's essays. Yang denied the accusations, arguing that the similarity stemmed from using the same sources. He also claimed that the professors edited ChatGPT outputs to make them resemble the essays he had written himself.
Yang had previously experienced academic issues; his scholarship had been cut due to low performance and negative behavior, but he appealed, regained his scholarship, and apologized to the university. Additionally, it was determined that the phrase "use artificial intelligence" was found in an assignment he submitted a year ago, but Yang defended this by stating he only used it for language checking.
Found guilty by the disciplinary board of the university, Yang filed two lawsuits against the university and his professors following this decision. The lawsuit includes accusations of evidence manipulation and violation of the right to a fair trial.
