The era of sustainability in agricultural production: Bosch introduces new powertrain technologies

HANNOVER – As pressure for sustainability increases in the global agricultural sector, technology giant Bosch has shared its comprehensive strategy for the future of agricultural machinery. According to the company's projections, more than 90% of the over two million agricultural vehicles to be produced in 2025 will continue to run on diesel engines. This makes making existing internal combustion engine technologies more environmentally friendly a priority.

A TRANSITION FORMULA FOR DIESEL ENGINES: SYNTHETIC FUELS

Jan-Oliver Roehrl, Executive Vice President of Bosch Power Solutions, predicts that the diesel engine will still be preferred in 90% of new vehicles in 2035 due to its durability and performance advantages. In this process, the company is focusing on renewable synthetic fuels (e-fuels) such as "HVO100" to reduce the carbon footprint.

Produced from waste materials, these fuels can be used in existing diesel engines using the "drop-in" method without the need for any modifications. Bosch has confirmed that its current injection systems are fully compatible with these fuels.

CARBON CERTIFICATION WITH "DIGITAL FUEL TWIN"

Aiming to make sustainability processes transparent, Bosch has announced a new software solution called Digital Fuel Twin (DFT). This system:

Tracks the entire journey of the fuel from production to the station. Digitally documents the ratio of renewable fuel used in the vehicle. Offers operators certificates that allow them to officially prove their carbon footprints.

HYDROGEN ENGINES AND 80% TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

Hydrogen engines, which stand out among the power systems of the future, are high on Bosch's agenda. The company states that hydrogen technology shares 80% similar components with traditional internal combustion engines.

Bosch, which is conducting more than 100 projects on hydrogen engines, which are particularly ideal for heavy agricultural machinery operating under high loads, announced that the first commercial applications will be launched this year.

THE 800-VOLT ERA IN ELECTRIFICATION

The electrification process in agricultural machinery is also gaining momentum. Bosch Rexroth and Bosch Engineering offer customized solutions for different segments:

eLION Portfolio: Heavy-duty applications are targeted with motors, inverters, and charging systems capable of operating up to 850 volts.

High-Performance Solutions: 800-volt high-density systems have been developed that are suitable for fully electric use in small and medium-sized machines and hybrid use scenarios for large machines.

Mechatronic Subsystems: Auxiliary units such as cooling fans are also equipped with high-voltage technology to increase vehicle efficiency.
