The innovation set to leave Wi-Fi behind: 100 times faster and more secure

Korean scientists have developed Li-Fi technology, which is set to revolutionize data transfer. Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science have solved the security issues of this new system that transmits data via light.

The team, led by Prof. Himchan Cho and Dr. Kyung-geun Lim, stated that Li-Fi represents a significant step forward not only in terms of speed but also in terms of security.

Theoretically, Li-Fi can transfer data 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. In previous systems, additional encryption devices were needed to ensure data security. However, the newly developed device eliminates this need by instantly encrypting data via light. Thus, speed and security are offered together.

In this innovative technology, eco-friendly quantum dots that emit intense light when electricity is applied are used. These dots are combined with a special electrode layer covered with microscopic holes. When an electric current passes through these micro-holes, the light intensifies in specific areas, activating the quantum dots and enabling data transmission.
