The water Google uses alone is one-third of Turkey's total
Google's data centers consume one-third as much water as Turkey.
Google, one of the world's largest technology companies, continues to increase its water consumption while developing projects in various fields ranging from search engines to artificial intelligence.
According to the 2024 Environmental Report, the US tech giant Google's data centers consumed approximately 6 billion gallons of water in 2024, which corresponds to 22.7 billion liters. The impact of artificial intelligence on the company's water consumption is coming to the fore. In 2022, when developments in artificial intelligence gained great momentum, the company consumed 21 billion liters of water, 20 percent more than in 2021, and it consumed another 21 billion liters of water in 2023. In 2024, when China also made its weight felt in artificial intelligence, the company increased its water consumption by 8 percent to 22.7 billion liters.
Turkey's water consumption in 2022 was 63 billion liters. Accordingly, Google alone consumes one-third as much water as Turkey on an annual basis.
Why do data centers use water?
Data centers use water to maintain the performance of computer servers that overheat. Water is used extensively in cooling facilities, evaporative cooling systems, and for humidification in data centers to manage temperature levels.
