WhatsApp feature sparks privacy debate for group chats: New members won't miss out anymore

WhatsApp aims to implement a feature for groups that allows access to past messages, a function requested by millions of its users. Thanks to this innovation, currently being tested with beta users, group administrators will be able to allow limited access to chat history for new members. This application, which is particularly notable for business and project groups, is expected to help those who join the group later to adapt easily.

Within the scope of this new feature, administrators will be able to choose from various options regarding how much of the history to share. These alternatives include showing only the last 100 messages or making chats accessible for a certain period (for example, going back 14, 25, 50, or 75 days). Thus, each group will be able to make settings in accordance with its own privacy standards and needs.

This function developed by WhatsApp is seen as a response to competitors like Telegram and Slack, which have been offering similar features for a long time. With this step that improves user experience, the way is paved for new group members to quickly adapt to the chat environment and actively participate in topics. This structure will also make it unnecessary to share important documents or decisions repeatedly.

Some users point out that opening up old messages could raise questions about privacy. WhatsApp, however, states that the authority to view message history will be entirely under the control of the group administrator. Unless the feature is manually activated, new members will not be able to access past posts. Furthermore, it is planned that this application will be supported with additional security options in the future.

The feature, which has made progress in the testing process, is expected to be offered to iOS and Android users within the next few months.
