WhatsApp introduces ads: Privacy concerns are rising

Meta has announced its plan to include advertisements in WhatsApp. This new feature will only appear in the "Updates" tab, specifically within the Channels and Status sections. However, this change is being interpreted as a harbinger of a significant transformation for WhatsApp, which users have long viewed as a secure and private communication platform.

VPN and digital security expert Marijus Briedis stated that this advertising system carries risks not only in terms of commerce but also regarding privacy. Briedis said, "Private messaging spaces are being monitored and transformed into commercialized digital spaces. Your messages may not be as secure as you think."

Meta, meanwhile, has attempted to alleviate concerns by stating that user messages are protected by end-to-end encryption and that this content cannot be viewed by the company or third parties.

Privacy expert Luiza Jarovsky also emphasized that such advertising integrations could lead to the collection of more user data. Experts state that this change could create an uncomfortable experience for users and shake the perception of trust.
