So, according to which criteria are habitable planets selected, and which are the closest potential candidates to Earth?

DETECTION OF HABITABLE PLANETS

A habitable planet is defined as a planet that has conditions where liquid water can exist on its surface, and therefore could potentially support living organisms. Scientists evaluate the habitability of such planets by looking at their distance from their stars, surface temperatures, and atmospheric structures. In particular, the planet must be in the area defined as the 'habitable zone,' meaning it must be in an orbit around its star that is neither too close nor too far. This refers to the ideal temperature range that could support the presence of liquid water.

Today, observations made with space telescopes such as Kepler and TESS have allowed us to detect thousands of exoplanets. These telescopes can indirectly reveal the existence of planets by observing small changes in the light coming from stars. Researchers analyze this data to determine the size, mass, and orbit of the planets. With these methods, the list of Earth-like planet candidates located in the habitable zone is growing.

THE CLOSEST HABITABLE PLANETS TO EARTH

One of the most interesting systems is the Trappist-1 system, located approximately 40 light-years away. In this system, which consists of seven planets orbiting a red dwarf star, at least three planets are located within the habitable zone. These planets are considered among the exoplanets most similar to Earth due to their suitable temperature and size. Discoveries in the Trappist-1 system stand out as an important turning point in the search for extraterrestrial life.

The closest potential habitable planet to Earth is Proxima Centauri b, at a distance of only 4.2 light-years. Located in the habitable zone of its own star, this planet has values quite close to Earth in terms of mass and size. It is thought that liquid water could exist on its surface; however, the level of radiation coming from its star and its atmospheric condition continue to be researched. Proxima Centauri b is expected to be one of the first real targets for interstellar travel for humanity.

Apart from this, relatively nearby exoplanets such as Ross 128 b, Luyten b, and Teegarden b are also located in the habitable zone and are among the candidates being studied. Whether the conditions necessary for life have formed on each of these planets will be understood more clearly with observations to be made in the coming years.

SCIENTIFIC INTERPRETATIONS AND FUTURE PLANS

Astrophysicists are focusing on detailed analysis of atmospheres and the detection of surface conditions to understand the habitability of planets. Especially thanks to new-generation astronomy tools like the James Webb Space Telescope, traces of water vapor, oxygen, or other vital gases are being searched for in the atmospheres of these planets. Scientists are hopeful about finding traces of extraterrestrial life as observations of these exoplanets increase. However, no definitive findings have been reached yet.
