2026 World Cup tickets are burning pockets
Ticket prices for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, have reached historic highs. Fans are facing costs that are 5 to 10 times higher than in previous tournaments.
Football fans are reacting to the level that ticket prices have reached for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In the tournament to be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, ticket prices for both the opening match and the final have multiplied compared to previous events. The exorbitant increase in fees for group stage matches and final tickets is drawing criticism from fans.
Tickets for the 2026 opening match have risen to levels that are economically inaccessible for many football fans. While tickets are divided into four different categories, those who want to watch the opening match from the stadium must pay at least 560 dollars. The most expensive tickets for the same match are being sold for 2,735 dollars. For comparison, tickets for the opening match of the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar ranged between 55 and 618 dollars.
The average price for tickets for group stage matches in 2026 is around 400 dollars. In the previous tournament in Qatar, this figure was even below 100 dollars. In 2022, ticket prices for group matches ranged between 11 and 220 dollars.
THE GAP IS WIDENING FOR THE FINAL MATCH AS WELL
The tournament's final match stands out as the point where the price increase is most striking. The most affordable ticket for the 2026 World Cup final, which will be played at the New York New Jersey Stadium, starts at 2,030 dollars, while the most expensive seats can reach 6,370 dollars. However, in the last final match played in Qatar, fans paid 206 dollars for the cheapest ticket and 1,607 dollars for the most expensive one.
The comparisons are not limited to the World Cup; football fans who wanted to attend the 2024 European Football Championship final only needed to pay about 100 dollars for the cheapest tickets. This situation once again reveals how high the increases in 2026 are.
CRITICISM FROM EUROPEAN FANS TO FIFA
The rapid rise in ticket prices has also brought about reactions from fan associations. Football Supporters Europe (FSE) has complained about FIFA to the European Commission. In a statement made by the association, an application was filed against FIFA with allegations of "high ticket prices, non-transparent and unfair purchasing conditions, and abuse of a dominant position."
In its statement, the FSE noted the following: "FIFA holds a monopoly on 2026 World Cup ticket sales and has used this power to impose conditions on fans that would never be accepted in a competitive market. For many, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience; fair and transparent access to tickets is essential."
