Acun Ilıcalı's Hull City remains silent in first leg
Hull City and Millwall played to a goalless draw in the first leg of the Championship play-off semi-final. The fate of the tie has been moved to the return leg to be played in London on Monday.
Hull City, the English Championship team owned by Acun Ilıcalı, hosted Millwall at the MKM Stadium in the first leg of the play-off semi-final. While the match started at a high tempo, the home side created several dangerous scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes but failed to find the back of the net, and the half ended goalless.
In the second half of the match, Hull City's Lewie Coyle attempted a shot from outside the penalty area that went just over the bar. Millwall came close to scoring in the 69th minute when a shot by Camiel Neghli hit the post and went out. As the match neared its final stages, Millwall's Leonard found the back of the net, but the referee disallowed the goal due to a foul.
While the matches played between the two teams during the league season were high-scoring, this time the attacking lines were locked, and the sides left the pitch with a 0-0 scoreline. With this result, the outcome of the play-off tie between the two teams remains to be decided in the return leg to be played in London on Monday, May 11. The team that advances to the final will be on the pitch at Wembley on May 23 to secure a ticket to the Premier League.
The other two teams trying to reach the Championship play-off final are Southampton and Middlesbrough, who finished the season in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Hull City previously played in the play-offs in 2008 and 2016, successfully earning promotion to the Premier League on both occasions.
