After the first half ended 1-1, the visitors increased the pressure and brought the score to 3-1 with goals in the 72nd and 80th minutes.

Despite trailing, Real Madrid did not give up. The score was leveled again at 3-3 with goals from Bellingham and Tchouameni in the 86th and 90th minutes. However, Oyarzabal stepped up for Real Sociedad in the 90+3rd minute, scoring both his second and his team's fourth goal to send the match into extra time.

In the extra time period, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti brought Arda Güler onto the pitch in the 106th minute.
