Arda Turan's İzmir plan rejected by UEFA
Shakhtar Donetsk head coach Arda Turan had announced that they wanted to play the UEFA Conference League Round of 16 match against Lech Poznań at the Gürsel Aksel Stadium in İzmir. Following the response from UEFA, it was announced that the match will be held in Poland.
After the Ukrainian representative Shakhtar Donetsk was drawn against Lech Poznań in the UEFA Conference League Round of 16, head coach Arda Turan shared his plans regarding the match with the public. Turan had stated that they wanted to play the match in İzmir at the Gürsel Aksel Stadium, which hosts Göztepe's home games.
THE İZMİR REQUEST HAD BECOME A TALKING POINT
Following Arda Turan's statement, Göztepe SK Honorary President Mehmet Sepil also made an assessment regarding the matter. Sepil had stated that they would be happy to host Shakhtar Donetsk in İzmir.
Following these developments, all eyes had turned to the decision to be made by UEFA.
NEGATIVE RESPONSE FROM UEFA
However, UEFA did not respond positively to Arda Turan's request to play in İzmir. Following the decision, the Shakhtar Donetsk club announced that the match to be played against Lech Poznań will be held in Poland.
MATCH SCHEDULE FINALIZED
It was reported that the first leg of the Round of 16 match between Shakhtar Donetsk and Lech Poznań will be played on March 12. It was announced that the return leg will take place on March 19.
