Beşiktaş to TFF on election decision: It will do more harm than good!

Turkish Football Federation President Mehmet Büyükekşi announced in a statement that they had decided to hold an Elective General Assembly on July 18. Following this announcement, Beşiktaş Club, in a statement made via its X account, expressed that this decision would bring more harm than good to Turkish football. 

The statement made by Beşiktaş is as follows: 

We have learned that the TFF Board of Directors' decision to hold an Elective General Assembly on 18.07.2024 was determined without offering any proposals, even though there are urgent decisions that need to be made to resolve existing problems.

At a time when Turkish football is experiencing chaos in every aspect and is in urgent need of a new, untarnished administration, holding an election on July 18, just a few weeks before the start of the 2024-2025 season, will do more harm than good to Turkish football.

We would like to state that we do not consider it a correct stance, nor do we accept that this announcement was made in this manner on a day that exemplifies the chaotic situation our football is currently in.

With dozens of examples such as pitch invasions where referees are punched, teams withdrawing from the field, brawls between fans entering the pitch and athletes, disciplinary referrals being implemented either before the scheduled date or delayed under pressure, VAR decisions being questioned, secret meeting recordings being leaked, the Super Cup turning into a crisis, and the process being unmanaged, this decision date is unacceptable as it will hinder the democratic will of the football family and cause the country's football to lose time during this critical period when we need a new professional organizational structure. 

We believe that Turkish football does not have a single day to lose.

The TFF statutes regulate how the general assembly is to be convened. No individual or administration can be above the will of the general assembly. As Beşiktaş JK, we state that we do not consent to Turkish football being buried in insurmountable problems by being managed with this mindset for another three months, and we would like to state that we will use the rights granted to us by law and regulations to the fullest extent, together with our other clubs and the stakeholders of the football family.

Our stance as Beşiktaş JK is clear. TFF elections must be held with multiple candidates, and its boards must be determined by election, not by appointment. It is almost impossible for a new administration taking office on July 18 to make quick and correct decisions, especially regarding the formation of the Central Referee Board (MHK) and the resolution of the major problems arising from VAR applications.

We share with the public our belief that for Turkish football to rid itself of all chaos and errors, and for league statuses and boards to be determined in a healthy manner, there is a need for a new administration to be elected by a general assembly that will convene immediately upon the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season, without wasting any time.
