Condemnation of racist banner displayed by Greek fans

The Panionios vs. Beşiktaş match, held in Athens as part of the BKT EuroCup, concluded with a 114-74 victory for our black-and-white representative. However, the most significant event to emerge after the match was a provocative and racist banner displayed by Greek fans in the stands. The Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) issued a statement in response to this behavior, which drew a strong reaction from the Turkish public.

In the statement released by the TBF, it was noted: “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the provocative banner displayed in the stands during the match between Beşiktaş GAİN Men’s Basketball Team and Panionios Athens in Greece as part of the BKT EuroCup organization, which targeted the Turkish nation and our country’s national and spiritual values. Such actions, which are clearly contrary to the universal values of sports, the spirit of fair play, and the environment of respect that international competitions should uphold, target not only our clubs but also Turkish sports, our country’s reputation, and shared human values. No sports organization can provide a platform for hate speech, discrimination, and insults directed at national values. As the Turkish Basketball Federation, we clearly state that we stand against this unacceptable attitude that damages the unifying power of sports; we emphasize that this incident must be investigated in all its aspects, those responsible must be identified, and the necessary sanctions must be applied with determination. On this occasion, we invite BKT EuroCup and EuroLeague, who are responsible for the organization of the match in question, to take responsibility regarding stadium security, organizational standards, and disciplinary practices, and to implement the necessary measures without delay to ensure that similar incidents do not occur again. The Turkish Basketball Federation will continue to stand against all kinds of discriminatory, provocative, and disrespectful attitudes that Turkish clubs and Turkish sports are subjected to on international platforms, and will continue to follow the process.”

In its statement, the Federation underscored that the unifying and universal values of sports should not be damaged by such incidents.
