England secures semi-final spot on penalties

In the first half of the match played at the Düsseldorf Arena, both teams struggled to create chances, and the teams headed to the locker rooms tied at 0-0.

The side to find the goal in the contest was Switzerland. In the 75th minute, a cross from Dan Ndoye deflected off England defender John Stones and fell to Breel Embolo, who scored to make it 1-0.

England's response to this goal came 5 minutes later. A shot by Bukayo Saka from a pass by Declan Rice hit the post and found the back of the net, bringing the score to 1-1.

No further goals were scored in regular time, and the match went to extra time.

In the extra time period, Switzerland came very close to scoring in the 117th minute. A cross sent into the penalty area by Xherdan Shaqiri headed toward the goal but bounced back off the post.

With the extra time periods also ending 1-1, the match went to a penalty shootout.

For England, Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, and Trent Alexander-Arnold all converted their penalties.

For Switzerland, Fabian Schar, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Zeki Amdouni found the back of the net during the penalties.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford denied Manuel Akanji's penalty kick for Switzerland.

England defeated Switzerland 5-3 in the penalty shootout to advance to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, England will face the winner of the Netherlands-Turkey match.
