Fatih Terim's take on the Portugal match: A Turkey lacking tactical discipline
Former national football team manager Fatih Terim commented on the 3-0 loss to Portugal in the EURO 2024 match, stating, "We watched a Turkey today that could perform neither offense nor defense well, and was far from tactical discipline."
Our National Team was defeated 3-0 by Portugal in their second match of Euro 2024 Group F.
Bernardo Silva scored the opening goal of the match in the 21st minute, putting Portugal 1-0 ahead. In the 28th minute, an own goal by Samet Akaydin brought the score to 2-0.
With no further goals in the first half, the teams went into the break with Portugal leading 2-0.
Portugal was also the side to find the net in the second half. In the 55th minute, Bruno Fernandes scored from a Cristiano Ronaldo assist.
Experienced manager Fatih Terim evaluated the Turkey-Portugal match on beIN SPORTS.
"FAR FROM TACTICAL DISCIPLINE"
Terim began his remarks as follows:
We watched a Turkey that could perform neither offense nor defense well, and was far from tactical discipline. A Portugal that had more possession and a Turkey defending against it. While Turkey was defending, it could neither close the gaps between the lines nor manage the marking of players and the ball well inside the 18-yard box. There could have been more goals. We must accept this.
Fatih Terim continued his statements:
The victory in the Georgia match and the beauty of the goals are all well and good, but the positions we conceded there should have invited us to be more careful. However, I did not see such caution or invitation. After 2-0, the game became very comfortable for Portugal. Turkey developed effective attacks with Kerem. It is a fact that the goals conceded affected the team in terms of morale and motivation. Turkey could not achieve the desired performance.
"YOU ARE GOOD IN ATTACK, BUT THAT WAS ALSO MISSING TODAY"
Evaluating the match in terms of tactics and discipline, Terim said:
In the second half, the ball did not leave Portugal's feet except when they didn't want it to. They controlled the game as they pleased. If they had needed more goals, they might have scored them. You can make mistakes defensively. You are good in attack, but that was also missing today. There was a Turkey that could perform neither offense nor defense well. The third goal we conceded—every goal conceded and scored is important. You cannot move away from tactics and discipline. We saw this in the third goal.
Stating that there is no need to be sad, the experienced figure said:
We need to prepare for the Czechia match effectively right away. There is no need to wait and be sad. We must turn this page very quickly and prepare for the Czechia match. If we advance from the group, we will compensate for this match very quickly. The issue is to advance from the group. I have a request from the Turkish people. Of course, the starting 11 will be debated. You cannot prevent social media. But we must give our coach, our entire squad, and our staff the morale and support needed to get them out for the Czechia match in the best way possible. Criticism can be made after the tournament.
"WE MUST SUPPORT WITHOUT BLAMING"
Stating that the national team needs help, Fatih Terim expressed the following:
We trust our coach and our team. We must support this trust sincerely until the tournament ends, without blaming anyone individually. People show their true colors in bad times. This is our bad time, and now we need to help our coach and our team. Any team can lose to Portugal.
