High School Golfers Project begins to bear fruit
Golf, a sport that has been accessible to only a certain segment of society in Turkey for many years, is becoming more widespread among young people thanks to school projects. As part of the efforts carried out by the Istanbul Golf Club for approximately 9 years, high school students are being introduced to golf, and students from HASAL, one of Istanbul's elite schools, showcased their skills in a tournament held after a year of training.
The project, launched about nine years ago to popularize golf in schools—a sport still accessible to a limited segment in Turkey—is bearing fruit. Golf is becoming a sport that high school students enjoy and prefer.
As a result of the work carried out by the Istanbul Golf Club for 9 years, golf has been included in school sports programs. One of the schools showing the greatest interest in golf was Hüseyin Avni Sözen Anatolian High School (HASAL), where students who rank in the top 3 thousand in the LGS exam are eligible to enroll.
Within the scope of the project, which was carried out with the support and coordination of HASAL Principal Adem Sağır, Physical Education Teacher Şenay Yerlikaya, and Istanbul Golf Club Board Member and Golf Director Andrew McNabola, selected high school students took lessons at the Istanbul Golf Club's facilities in Riva.
13 students from HASAL participated in the activities conducted throughout the 2025-2026 academic year. The students trained regularly for a year. In the tournament held at the Mustafa Koç Riva Golf Course on May 6, HASAL students competed among themselves for 3 trophies in the "Bunker Shots," "Chipping," and "Putting" categories. The exciting tournament concluded with a ceremony where the winners in the 3 categories received their trophies.
GREAT CONTRIBUTION TO STUDENTS
Although golf investments in Turkey have drawn attention in recent years, school projects are considered critical for popularizing the sport among young people. According to experts, golf training that begins at an early age contributes to students in areas such as focus, strategic thinking, discipline, and coordination.
AIM IS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF YOUNG GOLFERS
The educators and club officials running the project emphasize that their goal is to make golf more accessible. Pointing out that the number of licensed young golfers in Turkey is quite low compared to European countries, it is stated that school-based projects could change this picture.
