Iran's World Cup decision
Iranian Minister of Sport Ahmad Donyamali has announced that his country will not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran has made a significant decision following the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an attack carried out by the US and Israel.
Iranian Minister of Sport Ahmad Donyamali announced on state television that the Iranian National Football Team would not appear in the upcoming World Cup under these circumstances.
In his statement, Donyamali said, "Because this corrupt regime (the US) assassinated our leader, we cannot participate in the World Cup under any circumstances."
Previously, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had stated that US President Donald Trump had given him assurances regarding Iran's participation in the tournament.
The FIFA World Cup, which will take place in June and July 2026, will be co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
