Montella's goal explanation after 6-1 defeat: 'We need to improve'

Speaking at the press conference held after the match played at the Ernst Happel Stadium in the capital Vienna, Montella said, "First of all, I must say that we are sorry for our fans who came here and watched us from home. But when you look at it, the football in the first half and the football in the second half were two very different matches. I can say that we played good football in the first half, we were just at fault in some positions and that gave them the goals. 

There is one thing we definitely need to improve, and that is scoring goals. We created many chances in the first half but only scored one goal. The issue that saddened me in the second half is that after their goal, we lost our unity and started to open up gaps, and then what happened, happened. I am sorry for this result, there were some areas we needed to test, and frankly, I got the answers I wanted. From today on, we will continue to watch all the matches and we will try to bring the best group together in the best way possible," he said.

Stating that they need to improve some things, Montella said, "We need to bring balance. Even if it seems like we get carried away during periods when things are going well, we need to digest positive moments better, and today we need to digest negative moments better.

These must be constructive for us to improve. When you look at the past, we used to beat France and lose to Iceland, or we would beat the Netherlands and lose to a lower-ranked team; when you look at it, this is the right time for this to happen because it will improve us," he said.

The Italian coach gave the following response to the question, "The balls you lost while building up from the back led to the opponent's goals. What are your thoughts on this?":

"Actually, there was no point where we took a risk; we even had a numerical advantage in that area, we were building up 7 against 5. We had some good exits during that period, and sometimes when we couldn't exit, we had to play forward. I don't think we took a risk in that regard. We conceded the goals in the second half, compared to the first half. We need to analyze this defeat very well. The football we played in the first half was not too bad, one should not forget all the details. The players we fielded in the first half did not play together constantly, there were players who played little at their clubs, and perhaps there were players who were not used to this rhythm. 

This should also be taken into account. Why was I satisfied with the first half? Because there was both courage and desire, and we created chances. The balance after this heavy defeat needs to come from me. There were moments when we needed to remain balanced after the Germany victory as well; experiencing this in this match will be much more productive for us.

Because we also created a lot of chances. I will continue to work based on the first half we played, because we may have received heavy slaps in the second half, but after such a heavy defeat, we also need to solve our own internal problems."

"I THINK IT IS A PROVOCATION, I WILL NOT ANSWER"

When asked, "Do you think you are insisting on building up from the back?", Montella replied, "If you have a numerical advantage in that position, you have to build up the play. If there are 7 of your players in the last 30 meters and 5 from the opponent, you have to build up the play.

If you cannot build this play, if you cannot provide the advantage, we should do another sport. If the opponents play man-to-man, of course, we will not take this risk. When these types of build-ups and game structures are established, it gives you courage during the match. I haven't watched the second half again, but we built up less from the back in the second half and conceded more goals. It was a moment where we struggled and there was a lack of courage. This applies not only to me but also to my players. I have been in this business for 30 years, and I see that these problems have always been created in 30 years; if I didn't have mental strength, I shouldn't be doing this job," he replied.

Upon a question from a journalist living in Austria, "What did Austria do better than Turkey? Are you thinking of resigning?", Montella said, "When I watch the match again, I will have the opportunity to look at the positions, but frankly, some decisions in both matches left us in between. I will not answer your first question because I think it is a provocation. Do you quit your job when you make a mistake while asking a question? I think it is an unnecessary provocation and I will not answer," he said.
