In the first round of the Australian Open, the season's first grand slam tennis tournament, national tennis player Zeynep Sönmez, ranked 112th in the world, faced the 11th-seeded Russian racket Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Sönmez defeated Alexandrova 7-5, 4-6, and 6-4 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 37 minutes, securing her place in the second round.

With this victory, the national tennis player became the first Turkish female tennis player to win a singles match in the main draw of the Australian Open.

Zeynep Sönmez will face the winner of the Anna Bondar - Elizabeth Mandlik match in the second round.
