New FIFA regulation for yellow card rule

FIFA is preparing to make changes to its yellow card rules in line with the expanded tournament format. Ahead of the new organization, which will be held with 48 teams, a new model regarding the resetting of cards is on the agenda.

REGULATION ON THE AGENDA WITH THE NEW FORMAT

Before the tournament to be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, the change in question is expected to be discussed and decided upon at the FIFA Council meeting to be held in Vancouver.

TWO-STAGE RESET PLAN

In previous tournaments, yellow cards were only wiped after the quarter-finals. With the new regulation, it is planned to reset cards after the group stage in addition to this practice.

INCREASED NUMBER OF MATCHES WAS A FACTOR

With the addition of the round of 32 to the tournament format, there has been an increase in the number of matches. This situation brought with it the possibility of players being suspended more frequently due to the accumulation of yellow cards.

CONDITIONS FOR SUSPENSION ARE CHANGING

In the current system, a footballer could be suspended if they received two yellow cards during the process leading up to the quarter-finals. In the new system, two separate periods will be applied.

Accordingly, for a player to be suspended, they will need to receive two yellow cards either in the group stage or two cards in the knockout rounds (round of 32, round of 16, and quarter-finals).

It is stated that with this change, FIFA aims to reduce player absences in the knockout stages.
