Faruk Koca defended himself in a surprising manner in his initial statement following the incident. According to HaberTürk TV Ankara Representative Fevzi Çakır, Koca denied the accusations against him, stating,
"My intention was to spit in the referee's face. The slap I delivered would not cause a fracture. After my slap, he stood for about 5-10 seconds, then threw himself to the ground. Due to my heart condition, they immediately removed me from the scene. This incident developed due to the referee's incorrect decisions" he said.
