TFF officially announces: Number of teams in the Süper Lig is decreasing!

The Turkish Football Federation has shared with the public the number of teams determined for the upcoming seasons in professional leagues. In the statement made by the federation, it was stated that the Süper Lig will be organized with 18 teams in the 2025-2026 season.

The statement from the TFF is as follows:

"The Turkish Football Federation Board of Directors held a meeting on April 16, 2025, at the Riva Hasan Doğan National Teams Camp and Training Facilities; at the meeting, a decision was made to reduce the number of teams in the professional leagues.

While the number of teams in professional football leagues was 125 in the 2019-2020 season, relegation was not applied at the end of the season due to the joint request of the Union of Clubs to abolish relegation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2020-21 season, the number of teams in the professional leagues rose to 145.

It was aimed to gradually reduce the number of teams in all leagues, especially the Süper Lig, which was played with 21 teams in the 2020-2021 season; however, the withdrawal requests of clubs affected by the 2023 earthquake disaster were accepted, and the planned number could not be reached.

In order to increase club revenues and create a stronger competitive environment, the number of teams in the professional leagues, where 139 teams will compete in the 2025-2026 season, will be gradually reduced, and the current number of 139 professional teams will be reduced to 120 according to the relegation and promotion numbers specified by season in the image below."
