The Turkish National Team's early exit from the World Cup becomes a talking point on the international stage

The Turkish National Football Team, for which expectations were high at the 2026 World Cup, made an early exit in the group stage following defeats to Australia and Paraguay. Harsh criticisms were directed at the team with the following remarks: “Time to face the facts... We should never see Turkey as a surprise contender in the World Cup again. The fact that this was Turkey's third appearance in the World Cup finals and that they failed despite having important players such as Arda Güler, Kenan Yıldız, and Hakan Çalhanoğlu also drew attention. The team's underperformance relative to its potential was emphasized with the assessment: “I don't understand why we get so caught up in Turkey's hope for success. It was pointed out that the team only lasted two and a half hours longer in the tournament than Haiti and failed to put on a noteworthy performance: “They lasted exactly two and a half hours longer in the cup than Haiti. Football culture is just beginning to form in Haiti. They were breaking new ground... Turkey's adventure should be buried beneath theirs.”

Statistics also supported these criticisms. The fact that no goals were scored despite a total of 62 shots taken in the matches against Australia and Paraguay went down as a negative note in football history. Since 1966, there has been no other team record of taking so many shots in two matches without finding the back of the net.

Arda Güler, one of the team's talented players, drew attention with his role in the center of the pitch. Although the star footballer tested the goal with 11 shots, he could not find the back of the net. Kenan Yıldız, despite being at the forefront of the team's offensive power with 12 shots, was also unable to score. Hakan Çalhanoğlu sought a goal with 11 shots.

In Hay and Tharme's analyses, the atmosphere of panic in the team's play was also mentioned: “They would have been better off playing golf. The abundance of long-range shots is a ridiculous kind of ignorance or a sign of total panic. If you go hunting with these guys, definitely stand behind them.”
