Zeynep Sönmez bids farewell to Roland Garros in her first match
Rising star of Turkish tennis Zeynep Sönmez was defeated in straight sets by Australian Daria Kasatkina in her first-round match in the main draw of the French Open, ending her run in the tournament early.
Zeynep Sönmez, who achieved a historic success in Turkish sports this year, took to the court at the French Open (Roland Garros), the second major tennis tournament of the season. Sönmez, who reached the 59th spot in the WTA rankings—the highest position ever achieved by a Turkish player—faced her opponent, Australian Daria Kasatkina, at the tournament held in Paris.
Sönmez, who took an important step for Turkish tennis by qualifying for the main draw at Roland Garros, put up a competitive fight against her experienced opponent Kasatkina but lost the match with scores of 6-4 in both sets. In this year's 130th edition of the tournament, Zeynep Sönmez, who resisted her 53rd-ranked opponent, was eliminated in the first round.
