16.5 million TikTok contents removed in Turkey for violating 'community guidelines'

Emir Gelen, TikTok's Public Policy Manager and Turkey Spokesperson for the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey region, stated that approximately 16.5 million pieces of content were removed in Turkey last year for violating community guidelines, adding, "A very significant portion of this content was removed from the platform before it was even reported."

16.5 million TikTok contents removed in Turkey for violating 'community guidelines'

In his assessment of the matter, Emir Gelen pointed out that a multi-faceted strategy is required to ensure safety on TikTok, where over 1 billion pieces of content are shared monthly.

Explaining that they carry out this process both through artificial intelligence technology that enables the automatic detection of rule violations and with teams consisting of more than 40 thousand people who perform manual reviews, Gelen reported that moderation teams work every day to ensure that content on TikTok complies with the "community guidelines."

Stating that they proactively removed 98.9 percent of content that violated rules in Turkey, Gelen continued his remarks as follows:

"This is a rate above the global average. Last year, we removed approximately 16.5 million pieces of content in Turkey due to violations of 'community guidelines.' A very significant portion of this content was removed from the platform before it was even reported. As TikTok, the responses we provide to complaints are created by being reviewed by a team consisting of trained professionals and lawyers. At this point, we attach great importance to the cooperation of our users.

In the event that it is determined that the reported content does not violate our rules, the content in question is subjected to review by our in-house legal team for the purpose of removing unlawful content.

If the content is unlawful or violates our 'community guidelines,' the 'Incident Management' and 'User Feedback' teams remove the content and respond to the person who reported it. In cases where the content does not violate our rules or any legislation, a negative response is given to the complaint and the content is not removed."

'RELIABILITY IS BEING ABUSED'

Stating that there are certain actions they prohibit on the platform as TikTok, Gelen said these could be listed as "attempts to access TikTok through unauthorized methods, attempts to obtain sensitive, confidential, commercial, or personal information, and abusing the security, integrity, or reliability of the platform."
