Digitalization in energy infrastructure: The era of a single meter for electricity, water, and natural gas begins

A radical step toward change is being taken in Turkey's energy and water distribution infrastructure. Within the scope of a new project carried out by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), existing electricity meters will be transformed into an integrated digital hub that also covers water and natural gas consumption. Thus, billing and usage data will be consolidated into a single center for all distribution networks.

The developed National Smart Meter System (MASS) will bring together meters, modems, and communication software from different manufacturers under a common standard. In this way, subscribers will be able to save time and effort by monitoring all their consumption from a single screen.

The main conveniences the system will bring include real-time tracking of electricity, water, and natural gas expenditures on a single digital panel, easy comparison of historical data, and the reduction of operational costs by preventing companies from being dependent on a single technology.

With the establishment of the new infrastructure, subscribers will no longer have to switch between different institutions or applications and will be able to manage all their consumption from a single point. The goal of EPDK is to make all meters and software compatible with a "national ecosystem" logic.

During the installation phase, communication issues in rural areas are particularly prominent. Experts state that hybrid communication infrastructures will be prepared specifically for these regions and that alternative technologies will be developed to provide data transmission via power lines or radio frequencies. R&D activities are continuing without interruption to ensure the project runs smoothly.

With the new meter system to be deployed across Turkey, full digitalization in energy and water usage will be achieved. Once all subscribers benefit from the process, it is expected that energy management in Turkey will become more efficient and transparent.
