Gauze left inside woman's abdomen after childbirth

Frangiz Ergashova, who lives in the Ümraniye district of Istanbul, went to a private hospital last July to give birth to her son at 34 weeks. Frangiz Ergashova, who underwent a cesarean section, was discharged from the hospital 2 days later. Thinking that the pain in her abdomen after birth was normal during the postpartum period, Ergashova went to a hospital about 3 months later due to persistent pain. Explaining the problems she was experiencing at the hospital she visited, Ergashova received the answer, 'You might be constipated,' from the doctor. Although Frangiz Ergashova insisted that she was in pain, the doctor prescribed antibiotics and she left the hospital. Ergashova fed her child with formula for a long time because she could not breastfeed due to the antibiotics she was taking. Ergashova, whose pain continued to increase, applied to a different hospital last May. Ergashova, who explained her complaints to the doctor, was asked to have a tomography scan. The doctor looking at the tomography noticed that there was a foreign object on the left side of Ergashova's abdomen. After the results, the object in Ergashova's abdomen was removed by surgery 10 months later.

FILED A COMPLAINT AGAINST THE DOCTOR

After the checks and the tomography scan performed at the hospital, Frangiz Ergashova was taken into surgery. After the surgery, it was revealed that there was a 15-centimeter piece of gauze left in Ergashova's abdomen after the birth. Frangiz Ergashova learned that the negligence was the cause of the pain she had been experiencing for 10 months. The family, who said that their son, whom they named Umut Can, stayed in an incubator for 12 days after birth, stated that his condition is good now and filed a complaint against the hospital and the doctor.

“THEY OFFERED 300 THOUSAND LIRA AND SAID, ‘LET THIS MATTER BE CLOSED’”

Describing the difficult process they went through, Ergashova's husband Serkan Demir said, “My wife was 34 weeks pregnant, we went to the hospital for a check-up and they registered us. It was a private hospital. The doctor examined my wife and said, ‘The birth has started, the child is already 36-37 weeks old. There is dilation, we need to take her to an emergency delivery.’ My wife did not have any labor pains. I rushed home to get my wife's clothes. At that time, they had taken my wife into surgery and the birth had taken place. They said the child had shortness of breath and needed to be put in an incubator immediately. They said we had to register first and pay the fee. I registered quickly. I saw the child, he was purple at that time, I saw him again in the incubator 3 hours later. They set a high daily fee, the child was not breathing as they said. The birth happened at 34 weeks, they told us 36-37 weeks. After 9 days in the incubator, they asked me to pay the full amount. I was a bit squeezed during that process, I borrowed money from here and there. They wanted me to pay the full amount to discharge the child. They released the child on the 12th day, during that process I was going to Sultanbeyli every day, my wife was pumping milk and I was taking the milk. The child had jaundice, this time we took him to a hospital in Ümraniye. Checks were made and medication was applied. It took about a month to recover. We are restless, our child did not grow up well, my wife needs to have aesthetic surgery, her psychology has deteriorated. We suffered a lot from hospitals. We filed a lawsuit, the process is currently ongoing. We will do our best, we were hurt, let no one else be hurt. We went to the chief physician's office, they offered us 300 thousand liras for the surgery expenses and child expenses. They said, ‘Let this matter be closed here.’ 4-5 people had filed lawsuits against the hospital before us, there is a bit of carelessness and irresponsibility in the hospital. We demand that the Ministry of Health prevent this,” he said.

“I RETURNED FROM THE DEAD”

Speaking about the subject, mother Farangiz Ergashova said, “My pains started, there was constant discharge, I thought it might be normal after birth. It was my 2nd birth. 2-3 months passed and it was still continuing and I was not well, my back was hurting. Then my husband took me to the hospital and I explained it the same way at the hospital. I said I felt a foreign object, I said there was a weight, they said you might be constipated. They prescribed me antibiotics. Because the medicines were antibiotics, I could not breastfeed the child and we constantly fed him with formula. Because I had pain, I could not take care of my children. We went to another hospital, I told them about the hardness, a tomography was taken, they said you need to have surgery. Something like a bandage came out during the surgery and it had become inflamed. They said there was a 15 cm bandage. I walked around with a bandage, it had become inflamed inside me. My two children could have been left motherless. I can say that I returned from the dead.” The hospital management did not respond to the allegations.
