Good conduct reduction for man who killed his cancer-stricken wife

On August 28, 2023, in the Selahattin Eyyubi neighborhood of Yüreğir district, 76-year-old Abdullah Sarı shot and killed his 74-year-old wife, Naile Sarı, a mother of four who was battling cancer, in the back with a handgun following an argument. After waiting by the body of his wife of 55 years for a long time, Abdullah Sarı called his son, İbrahim Sarı, on his mobile phone and told him he had killed his mother. Upon arriving at the address, İbrahim Sarı found his mother lying in a pool of blood and notified the police. Sarı, who went to the courthouse and surrendered to police at the security checkpoint, was arrested by the court.

"THE INCIDENT HAPPENED BY ACCIDENT"

A lawsuit was filed against Abdullah Sarı at the Adana 12th High Criminal Court, seeking an aggravated life sentence for the crime of "intentional killing of a spouse." Sarı appeared at the final hearing. In the hearing, which was also attended by the lawyers of the parties and the complainants, the public prosecutor requested in his final opinion that the defendant be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional killing of a spouse" and up to 3 years in prison for the crime of "purchasing, carrying, or possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition." Asked for his final defense, Abdullah Sarı claimed he killed his wife by accident, stating, "I was maintaining my weapon. I did not shoot intentionally; the incident happened by accident."

GOOD CONDUCT REDUCTION APPLIED

The court panel first sentenced the defendant, Abdullah Sarı, to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional killing of a spouse." It then reduced his sentence to life imprisonment due to his good conduct during the hearings. The panel also sentenced the defendant to 1 year and 3 months in prison for the crime of "purchasing, carrying, or possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition" and ruled for the continuation of his detention.
