He styled his hair like a kalpak: 1 hour in front of the mirror every day
Çetin Sokulgan, who lives in Eskişehir, styled his hair—which grew back coarser after using various products following hair loss—to resemble a traditional kalpak hat. Sokulgan said, "I like walking around well-groomed like this every day. I do it for myself, not for anyone else."
The hairstyle of 56-year-old Çetin Sokulgan, who lives in Eskişehir, surprises those who see it and draws the attention of his surroundings. When Sokulgan moved to Eskişehir from his hometown of Sivas in 2010, his hair began to fall out, and he used various products to encourage regrowth. As his hair grew back with a coarser texture, Sokulgan discovered a style resembling a kalpak about 4 years ago. Sokulgan, who has been carefully styling his hair to look like a kalpak or a hat every day for 4 years, stated that he likes himself this way despite negative comments. Known as "Kalpaklı" (The one with the kalpak) due to his hairstyle, Sokulgan expressed that he intends to keep using his coarse-textured hair this way as much as possible.
"IT TAKES US 1 HOUR A DAY TO STYLE"
Çetin Sokulgan said, "I have been a person who loves hair care since my youth. Because I was working, my hair started to fall out later on. After it fell out, I came to Eskişehir in 2010. We met these barber friends. After the pandemic, this model emerged by chance while I was doing my hair. It has a coarse texture. With hairspray, gel, and the help of my friends, it takes us 1 hour a day to style it."
"I LIKE WALKING AROUND WELL-GROOMED LIKE THIS EVERY DAY"
Saying that he does not care about some of the negative comments he receives and that he is happy this way, Sokulgan continued:
"I like walking around well-groomed like this every day. I do it for myself, not for anyone else. It's not so that someone will like or appreciate me; I find myself pleasant. I love myself and I do it. They mostly compare my hair to Atatürk's kalpak. Some older people say, 'How do you deal with this every day?' We deal with it every day, we do it. I only use a brush, a hairdryer, hairspray, and gel. At the same time, we also use hair fibers. Hair fibers are our biggest helper. Young people generally like it, but those over 50-60 look at it with the attitude of 'What kind of hairstyle is this?' and say, 'Change it, cut it.'"
"I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THIS IN TURKEY"
Speaking about Çetin Sokulgan's hairstyle, his barber Eyüp Yanık said, "It wasn't like this when we first met. As it fell out, the hair shape changed a bit. We handle his personal grooming, and he handles the hair design himself. I haven't seen a hairstyle like this before; it's the first time I've seen it. We only trim the split ends and take care of his hair maintenance. It is a very difficult and bold hairstyle. I don't think there is another example of this in Turkey. Çetin brother is the only person with this hair. Some call him 'Kalpaklı', some say it suits him or it doesn't. There are such varied reactions."
