Istanbul Airport surpasses 177 countries in passenger numbers

The most up-to-date data for the 2025 aviation sector has shown that passenger numbers have reached new records. Turkey's pride, Istanbul Airport, surpassed the population of 177 countries with its success this year, while moving one step closer to the top in Europe. American and Asian-based airports once again stood out at the top of the list.

Istanbul Airport increased its passenger volume by 5 percent compared to the previous year, serving a total of 84,457,421 people. The gap between it and London Heathrow, which sits at the top in Europe, has narrowed to just 5,579 passengers. This development indicates that the Turkish airport could soon capture the title of the continent's busiest airport.

Asian countries also made significant jumps on the list. Shanghai Pudong Airport drew attention by rising five spots with a 10.6 percent increase in passenger numbers, while Tokyo Haneda secured its name in third place. In the Middle East, Dubai maintained its second-place position as the busiest airport outside the US with 95 million passengers.
