Maternity leave regulation postponed until after the holiday: What does the package include?

Preparations for a new regulation regarding the post-birth leave rights of working women are ongoing. The legislative proposal, which includes extending the duration of maternity leave and increasing certain post-birth payments, is expected to be addressed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey after Ramadan Bayram.

The proposal envisions changes to the leave duration for women who give birth and the financial support provided during this period. While the regulation has not yet been enacted, the details are expected to be clarified during the discussions in Parliament.

EXTENSION OF LEAVE DURATION ON THE AGENDA

According to the draft regulation, it is planned to increase maternity leave from 16 weeks to 24 weeks for women working in the public and private sectors. Accordingly, an additional 8-week period will be introduced to the current system, and this period will be added to the post-birth leave period.

On the other hand, it is also planned to maintain the current practice that allows female employees to work until a short time before birth. Accordingly, employees will be able to continue their duties until two weeks before birth.

CHANGES IN POST-BIRTH PAYMENTS

The proposal also envisions changes in the amount of payments made to working mothers in the post-birth process. According to the calculations in the draft, it is stated that the total payment amount could reach up to 336 thousand TL.

The scope of the legislative proposal and the implementation details are expected to be clarified following the discussions in the parliamentary committees and the General Assembly.
